Focus deeply, minimise distraction

Deep Work is the most valuable type of effort in a modern knowledge-driven economy. In his book of the same name, Cal Newport defines it as "activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit".

What we cover

Maximise your amount of deep work

Schedule specific parts of the day for deep work and prioritise them; create an environment conducive to lengthy concentration; track how many hours you achieve.

Concentration training

Use games like chess or brain training apps to exercise your concentration muscles and improve their stamina.

Minimise electronic distractions

  • Audit your screen time to separate "nutritious" usage from "junk food".
  • Remove notifications and other electronic distractors.
  • Delete or use blocking apps to limit use of Internet or social media that may inhibit concentration.
  • Structure & plan your leisure time to get the most out of it rather than defaulting to mindless scrolling.

Promote good habits

Developing good family screen habits, such as screen-free mealtimes, evening cut-offs. Physical removal of devices to reduce temptation. Thinking about the opportunity cost of screen time: what else could you be doing?
